Improved Concrete Crosstie Fastening System Design and Performance

AAR Technology Scanning Program

Start Date:

End Date:

Primary Objective

  • Identify methods of improving concrete railroad crosstie fastening system design and performance by conducting a thorough investigation of the frictional behavior of the fastening system.

Expected Outcomes

  • Characterization and quantification of the frictional demands on the components that make up the fastening system.
  • This work, coupled with previous rail seat deterioration research at UIUC, will facilitate more effective designs (e.g. improved materials selection).
  • Future research will include refined models of the fastening system, and parametric analyses of the fastening system, changing the frictional characteristics of components.
