Concrete Crosstie Fastener Sub-System Testing and Modeling

Primary Objective

  • Identify methods of improving concrete railroad crosstie fastening system design and performance by conducting a thorough investigation of the behavior of the fastening system using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and fundamental laboratory experiments.

Expected Outcomes

  • This work, coupled with previous rail seat deterioration research at UIUC, will facilitate more effective designs of the rail pad assembly(e.g. improved materials selection or geometric design).
  • Research in subsequent years will include refined models of the fastening system, and parametric analyses of the fastening system with a variety of components designed as sacrificial layers.
