Joe Smak Bio
Joseph Smak has over 33 years of experience in railroad engineering. He graduated from the Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. Joe's curriculum included an Extended Elective program in Railroad Engineering.
After graduation, Joe held various positions in the Engineering Department with Conrail for 19 years. He then went to CSX Transportation's Engineering Department, where he held various positions for over 9 years. Joe was the Director of Track Standards and Specifications at Amtrak, and he is currently the Senior Director of Track Maintenance and Compliance for Amtrak in Philadelphia, PA.
Joe is currently the President and Chairman of the Board of Governors of AREMA. He served one year as Senior Vice President in addition to two years as Vice President and two years as Director of AREMA's Track Functional Group. He is an active member of Committee 5 Track and Committee 4 Rail. Joe served as Chairman, Vice Chairman and Secretary for Committee 4 Rail for 10 years. He was the Chairman of Subcommittee 8, Non-Destructive Testing of Rail, and remains active on the AAR Technical Advisory Group for Rail Defect Detection. He was also a member of the North American Track Standards Group, and is a member of the American Association of Non-Destructive Testing. Joe is also currently an active member of the FRA Rail Integrity Task Force as well as the Rail Safety Advisory Committee.
