WHERE ARE YOU CURRENTLY EMPLOYED AND WHAT IS YOUR JOB TITLE?
I currently work for HDR as a Rail EIT (engineer-in-training).

IN 2-3 SENTENCES PLEASE DESCRIBE YOUR CURRENT ROLE.
I develop track and civil design plans, specifications, cost estimates, design and project guides while also supporting other civil disciplines such as drainage, structural and utilities.

WHY SHOULD WOMEN THINK ABOUT A CAREER IN RAIL?
Since it is a dynamic and vital industry, the possibilities are endless. Whether you are passionate about engineering design, project management, data analytics, or any other facet, there is a place for you in the rail industry. With continuous funding and a steady steam of projects, there is aways plenty of work to be done. It is also evolving technologically, which brings a lot of room for innovation.

Being a woman in this historically male-dominant industry may seem frighting but believe me when I say it is a welcoming industry full of bright people – many of whom are women themselves, paving the way for future generations.

HOW DID YOU END UP WORKING IN THE RAIL INDUSTRY?
During my Master’s program, I had the opportunity to work as a graduate research assistant for RailTEC – UIUC’s research group deeply involved in the rail industry. Through this experience, I gained valuable insights into the intricacies of the rail sector, including its challenges, opportunities, and the importance of innovation. It has also exposed me to various aspects of the rail industry, from infrastructure development to operational efficiency and sustainability initiatives. I was able to engage with professionals in the field, collaborate in research projects, and gain hands-on experience with cutting edge technology practices.

The exposure to the rail industry through my involvement with RailTEC instilled me in a sense of purpose and desire to contribute to its advancement. Consequently, I have chosen to pursue a career in the rail sector, driven by the belief that through innovation and collaboration, we can create a more efficient, sustainable, and resilient transportation system for the future.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB?
What I love most about my job is the continuous opportunity to learn and grow. While my primary focus is on the rail track design, the nature of the work is multidisciplinary, requiring me to delve into various subjects and engage in multitasking and logical thinking. Every day presents a new challenge or aspect to explore, whether it’s optimizing track layouts, learning new softwares, or addressing logical constraints.

Moreover, I am fortunate to work alongside talented individuals who share my passion for the rail industry. Collaborating on projects allow me to leverage diverse perspectives and expertise.

Finally, one aspect of my job that I deeply value is the balance it affords me between professional and personal life. Despite the demanding nature of work, I have the flexibility to prioritize my family and personal interest. This balance enhances my overall well-being and enables me to approach my work with renewed energy and enthusiasm.
